Sardinia's local government is offering to pay people up to almost $15,000 to move to the island. And they have set aside nearly $45 million so that 3,000 individuals, couples or families can start a new life there.
Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea — after Sicily — and it has everything you'd expect from Italy: beautiful cities, fine wines, and some of the best pizza and pasta.
What's more, Sardinia is also famous for its beautiful beaches, its lively festivals, its seafood, and its warm, sunny climate.
Hwever, Sardinia does not have enough people to enjoy all these attractions. It has the lowest birthrate in Italy, many young people are leaving the island to look for work, and in the countryside many houses are empty.
That is why the Sardinian government is offering money to bring more people to the island.
But of course, there are conditions.
To receive the government money you have to make your permanent home in a town or village with fewer than 3,000 people.
The money must be spent on buying or renovating a house. And the amount received cannot be more than half the cost of the house or renovation.
However, you will never need to return the money. And if you do move to Sardinia, you will be helping to bring new life to a beautiful part of the world.
